Welcome to the Fall 2018 BPLA Newsletter. It is a pleasure to bring you this final edition of the association year. As Rory Pheiffer notes in his President's Message this has been a busy quarter for the BPLA. In this newsletter you will find summaries and notes reflecting the many activities and events presented by our committees, as well as the work of the Board of Governors. Our colleagues have been generous with their time, providing thoughtful and interesting articles on matters of current interest. These include an overview of the key takeaways from the updated PTAB Trial Practice Guide by Monica Grewal, David Cavanaugh and Natalie Pous; a note on WesternGeco LLC v. Ion Geophysical Corp, by Lawrence Cogswell and Susan Glovsky; an article on Stopping the Sale of Gray Market Medical Devices by Mark Schonfeld; a note on the first patent prosecuted through the USPTO by the Patent Pro Bono Program of New England, prepared by Julian del Prado; and a review of the new PKI system transition, outlining changes of importance to every practitioner, provided by the Patent and Trademark Office. As I conclude my responsibility for the BPLA newsletter I am struck again by the remarkable benefit that this organization brings to the Profession, within the First Circuit and beyond. At the AIPLA Annual Meeting in Washington this October, I was told by members of the judiciary and of the bar that the amicus briefs of the BPLA exert an important influence on the development of law. I know from personal experience that attending the presentations of our committees helps maintain professional expertise; and I know that the friends and colleagues that I have found among our membership are a joy to know and one of the best resources that I have found for understanding the legal and practical aspects of practicing in the field. I am honored to have had this opportunity to contribute to the welfare of the organization. I owe special thanks to our BPLA Executive Assistant and Web Administrator, Constance Brennan, whose diligence and dedication have been invaluable to creating all four 2018 newsletters. Finally, thanks to the membership for their support and friendship. Michael Bergman
